Why Every Law School Applicant Should Write a "Why X Law School" Essay

Why X Law School written on Lined paper

While most law schools do not require a "Why X" essay, we encourage our clients to write one for every school on their list. At JurisPrep, we believe that this essay is your secret weapon for distinguishing yourself in a sea of law school applications—potentially getting you into schools you might otherwise not be accepted to or securing life-changing scholarships.

Think about it this way: your application is one of thousands being reviewed by an admissions committee. If you only submit the bare minimum—a personal statement and a resume—you are limiting yourself to only a few pages of information. We know you are more complicated and interesting than can be crammed into those pages. By adding a "Why X Law School" essay (along with a Perspective Statement), we can increase your application real estate to 6–8 pages that all work together to depict you as a uniquely powerful fit for their class.

The main purpose of this essay is to express exactly why you are applying to a specific institution. It should be clear to the reader that you have done your homework and that your presence is the "missing piece to the puzzle" for their law school.

At JurisPrep, we view this essay as a vital opportunity—so vital, in fact, that we recommend it for every single student we mentor. Here are a few more reasons why crafting a thoughtful "Why X" statement is a non-negotiable element of a successful application.

1. Not writing a "Why X Law School" essay is a wasted opportunity.

Most law schools offer an optional "Why X" component. Choosing not to submit one is essentially leaving a blank space where you could have made a stronger case for your admission. Admissions committees give you limited pages to establish who you are beyond your scores; failing to use this space is a missed chance to provide high-value information that hasn't been discussed elsewhere.

2. You can prove you are a uniquely powerful fit.

This isn't just about why you want to attend a school; it's about why you belong there. Rather than gushing about a school's prestige or location, you should use this space to show how your background and experiences align with their specific ambitions and programs. It's your second personal statement, designed to make it impossible for them to think, "No, I don't think we have a place for what they want to do here".

3. Adding dimensions to your application makes you more compelling.

The most effective applications present a multi-dimensional representation of the candidate. Your "Why X" statement should not simply restate your personal statement; it should highlight points about yourself that are not elsewhere emphasized. Each piece of your application should present a new "piece to the puzzle" of who you are, making your overall profile more rich and inclusive.

4. Demonstrate the specific value you bring to their community.

Law schools are building a community, and they want students who are intentional about joining it. By staying specific about professors, clinics, or journals you intend to join, you show that you can do more than just copy-paste an essay; you are showing them exactly how you will plug into their institution to achieve your long-term career goals.

Strategies for Success

  • Stay Specific: Avoid generic praise. Use guiding questions like: Are there specific professors you want to work with? Which clinics or externships align with your past experiences and future goals? Is this your first-choice school (If so, tell them!)?

  • Show, Don't Tell: Use a story-telling style to demonstrate fit. Like our client Olivia, who used her experience working as a personal trainer to explain her passion for health law, tell the story that shaped your goals and let the school see how their programs are the logical next step on your journey.

  • Tailor Every Single Essay: Admissions committees can tell if you've only changed the university name. While you can recycle your structure, the content must be different for every university to show true interest.
